parfum - memorable niche scents
The best place to buy parfum online in Europe.

The original word for ‘parfum’ comes from the Latin word ‘per fumum’, it means; through smoke. The art and science of making perfume is known as ‘perfumery’ and it originated in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and further refined by the Persians and Romans. Perfumery also existed in Eastern Asis but much of the fragrance is based on incense.

The perfumer does the composition of perfume. The perfumer is also sometimes affectionately referred to as the ‘Nez’, which is French for ‘nose’, because they have a very good sense of smell and are skilled in smell composition.

Interestingly, the first recorded chemist was a woman by the name of Tapputi. An account of her was recorded on a cuneiform tablet retrieved from Mesopotamia and dates back the second millennium BCE. It describes the process of distilling flowers, oils, and calamun and filtering the results back through the distiller.

Generally speaking, there is no standard set of procedures for formulating parfum; there is only a set of guiding principles for developing the fragrance from a concept. The smell of the perfume is not the result of mixing many ingredients even though many of the ingredients contain colorants and anti-oxidants, designed to lengthen the shelf life and improve marketability.
